Suitability Calculation for Red Spicy Pepper Cultivation (Capsicum annum L.) Using Hybrid GIS-Based Multicriteria Analysis

Abstract: Red spicy pepper is traditionally considered as the fundamental ingredient for multiple authentic products of Eastern Croatia. The objectives of this study were to: (1) evaluate the optimal interpolation method necessary for modeling of criteria layers; (2) calculate the sustainability and vulnerability of red spicy pepper cultivation using hybrid Geographic Information System (GIS)-based multicriteria analysis with the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method; (3) determine the suitability classes for red sp… Show more

“…While the common approach is to use a 2 class (suitable/unsuitable) approach for modelling crop suitability [44][45][46][47], we propose a method that models four suitability classes (optimal, moderate, marginal and limited) as a 2 class system may over-estimate climate impacts by not scaling the suitability. Scaled four-class (high, moderate, marginal and unsuitable) suitability models are an alternative for determining suitability classes of agricultural crops from machine learning algorithms [31,[48][49][50][51]. To model the four suitability classes of the four crops, we applied the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) machine learning approach to the variables.…”

“…Various forms of a multicriteria analysis are successfully applied to the agricultural crops, resulting in the recommendations for better agricultural land management (Radočaj et al, 2020b). An analytical hierarchical process (AHP) is one of the multicriteria analysis methods with a broad application in numerous activities worldwide (Cobuloglu and Büyüktahtakın, 2015;Jurišić et al, 2020). Its main feature is a mutual comparison of the relative influence of criteria pairs on an end result, which enables a more objective user's influence on an advantage calculation (Saaty, 1977).…”

“…Figure 10 displays various terrain topographic models calculated using SRTM DEM: slope [61], wind exposition index, potential incoming solar irradiation [62], flow accumulation model [63], and topographic openness [64]. Terrain slope is the basic topographical parameter of the terrain and is widely used in spatial planning in civil engineering, transport, and environmental studies [65]. Potential solar irradiation was calculated for the year 2020, using a 70% generalized atmospheric permeability parameter, which includes the influences of clouds, fog, and precipitation on the amount of incoming solar radiation.…”

“…The appropriate waste management method, especially in urban environments, reduces air, water and soil pollution caused by the discharge of ammonia, heavy metals, and nitrates from waste [79]. The application of GIS-based multicriteria analysis in agriculture focuses on the calculation of cropland suitability according to climatic, pedological, and topographical terrain conditions [65]. The selection of the optimal area for crop cultivation reduces the need for the application of fertilizer and pesticides, resulting in a lower release of heavy metal contaminants into the environment.…”
