Sulfur-containing polymers derived from SO2: synthesis, properties, and applications

Abstract: Sulfur-containing polymers enjoy the merits of excellent optical performance, degradation, chemical recyclability, and adhesive abilities toward metal ions. Recently, increasing attentions in both academic and industrial circles have been paid...

“…233 Recent applications of sulfur dioxide include the preparation of sulfur-containing polymers for the design of next generation thermoplastics. 234 In low oxidation state alkaline earth metal chemistry, the reduction of SO 2 by dimagnesium( i ) complexes 6 Me and 21 has been shown to yield 213 and 214 , respectively (Scheme 43). 42 In both instances, two molecules of SO 2 have been reductively coupled through the installation of an S–S linkage.…”

“…In the past decade, significant achievements have been made in the synthesis of various S-containing polymers through copolymerization or multicomponent polymerization techniques involving at least one S-containing monomer. Consequently, a variety of S-containing polymers, , including polythioethers, polythiocarbonates, , polythioesters, and poly(thioamide)s, have been synthesized by copolymerizations involving S-containing monomers, such as dithiols, episulfides, COS, carbon disulfide (CS 2 ), and S 8 (Figure ). The thiol-based click reactions with dienes or diynes and MCP concerning S-containing monomers afford efficient strategies for the construction of S-containing polymers with complicated structures. , In addition, precisely controlling the main chain stereochemistry facilitates the formation of isotactic polymers with enhanced thermal and mechanical properties.…”

“…40–42,45 For instance, in a previous study, the tensile strength and the elongation at the breaking point of the TPU elastomer were increased by replacing the polyether segments of SS with poly(γ-butyrolactone) segments. 45 Furthermore, sulfite groups (–OS(O)O–) also exhibited higher polarity than ether groups, 46 implying that the properties of TPU elastomers can potentially be enhanced by using PPS as the SS.…”
