Indonesia's commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2060 is driving the government to implement short-term policies aimed at promoting energy efficiency, renewable resources in the electricity sector, and the electrification of transportation. The logical consequence of this transportation electrification policy is the increased use of energy storage media, including lithium-ion batteries. The installed capacity of lithium-ion batteries is predicted to continuously rise with a CAGR of 25.45%, reaching 10.5 TWh by 2030, of which 8.1 TWh will be installed in electric vehicles, according to Circular Energy Storage. The potential for lithium-ion battery waste to be processed in Indonesia is estimated to reach 250,000 tons by 2030, increasing further due to policies encouraging the domestic use of electric vehicles. This policy is expected to necessitate 0.2 million tons of cobalt and 1.3 million tons of nickel by 2040. The lack of domestic lithium resources is also a driving factor for developing a recycling industry to ensure the sustainability of the electric vehicle industry. A case study calculating the recycling potential from lithium-ion battery-powered devices sold in Indonesia in 2022 indicates a circular economic opportunity of US$ 49,767,416 and a reduction in emissions of 7,472 tons of CO2. This underscores the importance of involving the recycling industry in designing policies to support the transition to net zero emissions.

There is a shift from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles (EVs), with the primary goal of reducing CO2 emissions from road transport. Battery technology is at the heart of this transition as it is vital to hybrid and fully electric vehicles’ performance, affordability, and reliability. However, it is not abundant in nature. Lithium has many uses, one of which is heat transfer applications; synthesized as an alloying agent for batteries, glass, and ceramics, it therefore has a high demand on the global market. Lithium can be attained by extraction from other natural resources in igneous rocks, in the waters of mineral springs, and geothermal brine. During the research, geothermal brine was used because, from the technological point of view, geothermal brine contains higher lithium content than other resources such as seawater. The nanofiltration separation process was operated using various solutions of pH 5, 7, and 10 at high pressures. The varying pressures are 11, 13, and 15 bar. The nanofiltration method was used as the separation process. High pressure of inert nitrogen gas was used to supply the driving force to separate lithium from other ions and elements in the sample. The research results supported the selected parameters where higher pressure and pH provided more significant lithium recovery but were limited by concentration polarization. The optimal operating conditions for lithium recovery in this research were obtained at a pH of 10 under a pressure of 15 bar, with the highest lithium recovery reaching more than 75%.

The remains of the corn shelled, or so-called corncob, are classified as a biomass source but are still not utilized optimally. Corncob waste can be used as briquettes, an alternative fuel, and can reduce environmental pollution from fossil fuels. This information motivates the team from Kadiri University to carry out community service activities. This community service activity was carried out by making briquettes from corncob waste simple. Therefore, it can be practiced by residents of Ngampel Village, Papar District, Kediri Regency. The first agenda of this activity were preparation, demonstration followed by practice, and ending with activity evaluation. The preparation stage was performed by making a video tutorial for making briquettes from corncob. At this stage, socialization with the target community was also carried out. The next activity was the demonstration and practice stage, implementing strict health protocols. The end of this activity was by evaluating the activity. The majority of residents were satisfied with this activity. They also opined that this activity could be sustainable with good management. The activity made it possible for corncob waste in the environment to decrease gradually.Sisa dari jagung yang sudah dilakukan pemipilan atau yang disebut bonggol jagung tergolong sebagai sumber biomassa, akan tetapi masih belum dimanfaatkan secara optimal. Limbah bonggol jagung sebenarnya dapat digunakan sebagai briket dan bisa menjadi alternatif bahan bakar, serta dapat mengurangi pencemaran lingkungan dari bahan bakar fosil. Hal ini menjadi motivasi bagi tim pengabdian dari Universitas Kadiri untuk melakukan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilakukan dengan cara membuat briket dari limbah bonggol jagung dengan cara yang sederhana. Sehingga bisa dipraktekan oleh warga Desa Ngampel Kecamatan Papar Kabupaten Kediri. Agenda pertama kegiatan ini adalah persiapan, demonstrasi yang dilanjutkan dengan praktik serta diakhiri dengan evaluasi kegiatan. Tahap persiapan dilakukan dengan membuat video tutorial pembuatan briket dari bonggol jagung. Pada tahap ini juga dilakukan sosialisasi terhadap masyarakat sasaran. Berikutnya adalah tahap demonstrasi dan praktik, dengan penerapan protokol kesehatan yang ketat. Akhir dari kegiatan ini yaitu dengan melakukan evaluasi kegiatan, mayoritas warga puas dengan kegiatan ini. Mereka juga berpendapat, apabila kegiatan ini bisa berkelanjutan serta adanya manajemen yang baik. Limbah bonggol jagung di lingkungan tersebut lambat laun akan berkurang.
