Sunflower Genetic Collection at the Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry

Abstract: Abstract:The results of a long-term program aimed at discovering the hidden potential and genetic variation of sunflower accessions in a germplasm collection and the creation of a set of homozygous lines are presented. A genetic collection has different levels of development: Level 1-homozygous lines with morphological characters are created; Level 2-genetic control of the characters and segregation visually estimated under field conditions are studied; Level 3-selection of lines homozygous for genes controlli… Show more

“…About half of these, 2,519 accessions, represent the world’s largest wild relatives sunflower collection, comprising 53 species – 39 perennial and 14 annual species ( Seiler et al, 2017 ). Another large collection for sunflower (cultivated and wild) is maintained at the Vavilov Institute of Plant Industry, which consists of a total of 2,780 accessions from which 2,230 represent cultivated sunflower accessions and 550 wild sunflower accessions belonging to 24 species (19 perennials and 5 annuals) ( Gavrilova et al, 2014 ). Some smaller numbers of 585 accessions of H. annuus are available via GRIN-CA, the Plant Gene Resources of Canada 2 and additional 613 sunflower accessions of diverse origin are distributed by the IPK Gatersleben 3 .…”

“…The Oil Crop Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agriculture Science in Wuhan, China, maintains 2813 sunflower accessions, predominantly cultivated (Gao et al, 2001). The Vavilov Research Institute of Plant Industry in Russia maintains 2230 cultivated sunflowers and 550 wild accessions, encompassing 5 annual and 19 perennial species (Gavrilova et al, 2014). The Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia, has a cultivated collection of several thousand lines (S. Terzic, personal communication, 2016) and a wild sunflower collection of just over 1000 accessions of 47 wild species, although they do not have seed backup of 40% of the species (Atlagić and Terzić, 2015).…”

“…Other disease resistance has been introgressed from the wild perennial species H. maximiliani Schrad. and H. giganteus L., (Liu et al, 2010), as well as alleles for achene yield and modification of fatty acids and other industrial and nutritional products (Gavrilova et al, 2014). Some of the breeding lines developed from introgressions from CWR have been listed in Table 2.…”

“…Like many other plants, selection and introgressive hybridization played a decisive role in the evolution of the cultivated sunflower. The first domesticated sunflower forms were brought by naturalists to Europe at the beginning of the 16th century, where further development of the crop took place until the 19th century (Gavrilova and Anisimova, 2017). The search for genes that served as targets for domestication and subsequent selection, as well as introgressed genes, is very relevant for elucidating sunflower evolutionary history.…”
