Sunspots are Correlated with Foliar pH in Grapevines

Abstract: Foliar pH is a specific multifaceted parameter that is sensitive to a deficit in soil water and to temperature variations. It also represents a tool that can be used to rapidly phenotype the symbiosis induced in several crops by bio-fertilizers containing Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi. Yearly decreases in foliar pH, which dropped from 3.73 in 2015 to 3.15 in 2017 and then stabilized at around 3.13, have been observed in an experimental vineyard near Torino (Italy) in six grapevine cultivars. In this paper, thes… Show more

“…If it is common practice to refer to the Earth as a mother, but let us not forget that the Sun is the father of life on earth, and it cyclically affects the foliar pH of vines 28 , probably through UV variations 29 , an important characteristic of the leaves that has not been considered so far, but a link with productivity, that is, more than five kg per plant per pH unity decrease, has been demonstrated in the present work.…”

“…However, this app cannot be used for horizontal training systems (as for the pergola system) and for this reason the Erbaluce plants were excluded. an NIR-SCiO TM smart device, as described in Masoero et al 18 , with two replicates for each leaf. The foliar pH data were analyzed, according to a bifactorial linear model, with vine and vineyards within vine as the fixed effects.…”

“…A progressive decrease in foliar pH, which is correlated with the number of sunspots during the second (descending) phase of the 24 th cycle, has been highlighted in a multi-year study on vine 1 . It has been hypothesized, in studies on the cycles of forest moth pest species 2 , that such a decrease was due to an excess of UVB radiation, which is counter-correlated with the number of sunspots and is measured through the relationship with Ozone, as detected by means of TOMS 3 .…”

“…In fact, on the basis of a critical review of the phytopathological pandemics historically recorded during the 24 th solar cycles 1 , it appears that, in 22 out of 25 cases, the sunspots were in a position below the average position of the cycle for the year in which the pandemic event exploded. Considering the result observed on vine, and extrapolating it to the past, this finding suggests that the pH of the plants is tending toward an acid phase, enriched with energy and protons and -in a certain as yet not defined way -favorable for the spread of parasites, which could result in their prevalence.…”

“…Average values above 6.0 were obtained for all the cultivars evaluated, which were in the same group, except for Mônica. This variable affects the digestibility of the leaves of some species; therefore, the higher the pH, the greater the digestion of the leaf material and free sugar content (Masoero et al, 2019). In contrast, under lower pH conditions, leaves tend to accumulate more water, lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose, and crude fibers (Masoero et al, 2019).…”
