Superabsorbent crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose-PEG hydrogels for potential wound dressing applications

Abstract: This study focused on the synthesis and comprehensive characterization of environmentally friendly hydrogel membranes based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) for wound dressing and skin repair substitutes. These new CMC hydrogels were prepared with two degrees of functionalization (DS=0.77 and 1.22) and chemically crosslinked with citric acid (CA) for tuning their properties. Additionally, CMC-based hybrids were prepared by blending with polyethylene glycol (PEG, 10wt.%). The results demonstrated that superabso… Show more

“…The FTIR spectra (Supp Figure S1) shows the symmetric and asymmetric stretching peaks of the COO − of CMC at 1412 and 1614 cm −1 respectively . The interaction of the COOH group in the CL‐CMC and the NH 2 of the cysteamine via amidation reaction is confirmed by the disappearance of the band at 1733 cm −1 (carbonyl stretching of COOH ) for S‐IIPs. Moreover, the successful incorporation of cysteamine was established by a weak band associated with the thiol (−SH) stretching at wavenumber 2514 cm −1 and 2546 cm −1 for S‐IIPs and CL‐CMC respectively.…”

“…In fact, more crosslinking concentration causes a higher crosslinking density and decreases the space between the copolymer chains and consequently, the resulting highly crosslinked rigid structure can not be expanded and hold a large quantity of water. (9)(10) Table 1…”

“…The properties of cellulose have attracted considerable research attention since its discovery and isolation by Anselme Payen in 1838 . As one of the most abundant organic resources on the earth, cellulose has been applied to many fields, including wound dressings, biomedical applications, sensors, separation and water purification . Cellulose is commonly obtained from plants and microorganisms .…”
