Supercapacitors studies on BiPO4 nanoparticles synthesized via a simple microwave approach

Abstract: BiPO 4 nanomaterial was synthesized using EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid) as the surfactant via a simple microwave method. The structure and morphology of BiPO 4 were systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) studies. The obtained BiPO 4 nanoparticles were, on average, 150-300 nm. The electrochemical results showed that the specific capacitance of BiPO 4 obtained using the microwave route was up … Show more

“…Metal phosphates have been vastly and successfully adopted in catalysis applications [4][5] [6] over the years and are only being tested recently for energy storage applications [7], [8], [9], [10], [11]. However, the promising trend recorded has inspired further research into their electrochemical energy storage capability.…”

“…The FTIR spectra of BiPO 4 calcined at different temperatures are shown in Figures 5 and 6. The FTIR bands of samples are attributed according to the bibliography (Romero et al, 1994; Vadivel et al, 2017; Zhao et al, 2011; Zhao, Li, Yang, Zheng, & Li, 2013; Zhu, Wang, Ling, & Zhu, 2017; Zhu, Zhang, Zhao, & Zhu, 2017). The observed absorption bands correspond to the different vibrations of the PO43- phosphate groups in the frequency range 489–630 cm −1 and 880–1,150 cm −1 .…”

“…In the literature, the most widely used methods for the preparation of bismuth phosphate BiPO 4 are as follows: hydrothermal reaction (Jianming, Weiren, Licai, & Jianqing, 2014; Wang, Guan, Li, & Li, 2012), solvothermal method (Vadivel et al, 2016; Xue et al, 2009), microwave synthesis (Li et al, 2011; Vadivel et al, 2017), and, sometimes, the electrospinning method (Liu, Liu, Lu, Sun, & Xiu, 2014).…”

“…Microwave‐assisted hydrothermal heating is a green approach to synthesize materials in a shorter time and with lower power consumption, as a consequence of the direct and uniform heating . For example, the formation of BiPO 4 nanoparticles only required 3 min heating in microwave‐assisted hydrothermal process . In an alternative, chemical precipitation method has also been attempted for BiPO 4 .…”

“…Correspondingly, the specific capacitance of BiPO 4 electrodes was enhanced on increasing pH from 1 to 7, and reached a maximum specific capacitance of 1052 F g −1 at 2 mV s −1 at pH7. The rod‐like and porous structure facilitated easy diffusion of ions …”
