Superconducting Lenses

Abstract

In the beginning of the sixties the construction of superconducting lenses started out accompanied by enthusiastic prognostications / Fernandez Moran (1965), Laberrigue et al (1964)_7. Regarding more or less theoretical aspects some doubts have arisen in the last years concerning any real advantages in superconducting electron optic devices J_ Bon jour (1976)_7. I think, however, one is now able to prove with facts that superconducting lenses are going to be powerful instruments in electron microscopy. Examples for the possibilities are given in the micrographs (Fig. 9-13) taken with a superconducting lens system. Figure 13d, e.g. demonstrates that mercury atoms arranged hexagonally with a distance of O.36 nm can be clearly distinguished.
