“…The crystal structure is found to be a variant of the layered ThCr 2 Si 2 structure with additional carbon atoms in the rare-earth plane. 3 Considerable excitement was generated by the discovery of superconductivity in a number of such compounds, 1,2,[4][5][6] with the highest T c of 23 K in YPd 5 B 3 C 0.3 , 5 and the interesting observation of interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in other systems. 8 Among the other members of this class, the mϭ2 and nϭ2 series has been synthesized for Tϭ Ni and Rϭ Lu and its crystal structure determined.…”

“…By using rapid-quenching techniques, StroK m et al could also prepare ribbons out of YNi B C (39). A few compounds like ScNi B C (40) and ThNi B C (41a}41c) which also superconduct at 15 and 6 K respectively, were found to be metastable. In the¸nNi B C series of materials, it was found that Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu, Y, Sc, and Th compounds exhibit superconductivity, out of which the magnetic rare earth analogues also exhibit magnetic transition.…”

“…In this type, with Ni, all the rare earth members [7], Sc [32,33], Y [7], Th [34], U [34,35] form. Sc-member forms as meta-stable state (see below).…”
