Superficial Circumflex Iliac Artery Perforator Flap as a Workhorse Flap: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract: Background There are various advantages and disadvantages attributed to superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator (SCIP) flap. The aim of this study is to evaluate the versatility and reliability of free SCIP flap by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature in terms of flap characteristics, pedicle types, and outcomes, including the different types of flap elevations. Methods PubMed, Embase OVID, and Cochrane CENTRAL were searched up to January 2019. All original articl… Show more

“…14 Furthermore, a systematic review by Altiparmak et al identified a mean harvest vessel diameter of only 0.67 mm, presenting additional differences between the current study and previously reported literature. 22 Notably, the BMI in the above studies was substantially smaller than our cohort, with a mean value of 23.6 kg/m 2 . In regard to vessel diameter, an issue that arises in these comparisons is heterogeneous reporting throughout studies.…”

“…(3) the SCIA and SIEA branched off separately (n ¼ 53, 17.0%); (4) the SIEA, the superficial branch, and the deep branch took off separately (n ¼ 25, 8.0%) (►Figs. 4,5,6,7). Three branching patterns were observed in the hemiabdomens where either the SIEA or the superficial branch was missing: (5) the superficial and the deep branch of the SCIA shares a common trunk with the SIEA absent (n ¼ 54, 17.3%); (6) each branch of the SCIA took off singly with the SIEA absent (n ¼ 41, 13.1%); (7) the SIEA and the deep branch originated separately with the superficial branch missing (n ¼ 11, 3.5%).…”

“…If the defects were smaller and required shorter pedicle length, superficial circumference iliac artery perforator flaps were considered. [20][21][22] When using large vessels as recipients, end to side was preferred to preserve the distal flow, whereas when small branches were used, end to end was performed. ►Table 2 shows the characteristics of the flap along with the anastomosis.…”
