Superfilter Technique in SDN-Controlled Elastic Optical Networks [Invited]

Abstract: In flexigrid elastic optical networks, filtering cascade effects strongly affect the overall transmission performance. To avoid these detrimental impairments, each lightpath is typically configured, in an independent way, to encompass additional spectrum resources. Thus, the flat central region of the traversed filters are exploited and their transition region around the cutoff frequencies is avoided. However, handling lightpaths independently leads to less efficient spectrum utilization. In this study, we pro… Show more

“…Moura et al [200], [201] have explored SDN based adaptation strategies for EDFA operating points to increase the OSNR. In a complementary study, Paolucci et al [202] have exploited SDN control to reduce the detrimental filtering effects. Paolucci group wavelength channels that jointly traverse a sequence of filters at successive switching nodes.…”

“…Because new channels can be added later on into the previously unused gaps, and unused channels are retired at an arbitrary time, it is impractical to refer to a channel using its sequential number. 6 We chose to use the central frequency and the channel bandwidth (in the optical domain) as a means of identification. Using the upper and lower frequencies would work equally well.…”

“…On the L0, an optical network consists of an interwoven mesh of frequency channels [6]. Each and every vertex in the network graph, and, unfortunately, also each and every edge, applies a set of transformations to the carried mixture of light frequencies.…”

“…A particular case of DFC is the super-filtering technique [27], consisting in the aggregation of several independent super-channels (or either single channels) within the same filter pass-band along common links. An example is shown in Fig.…”
