Supporting task resumption using visual feedback

Abstract: For information workers, maintaining high productivity relies on timely task resumption after interruptions, which are frequent. However, people's task resumption ability is compromised by disruptive environments and human cognitive limitations. We propose that a helpful intervention is to provide visual feedback about the duration of a suspended task. Results from a controlled study show significantly shorter average off-task time by adding visual feedback. Further, using emotionally attachable visual objects… Show more

“…Feedback sign refers to whether the content is framed positively or negatively. Studies comparing the effect of rewards and penalties on engagement (Jain et al, 2012) and the effect of positive and negative feedback on work pace interruptions (Liu et al, 2014) found a greater effect for positive feedback than for negative. Moreover, the latter study found that negative feedback can increase performance but cause greater stress levels.…”

“…In case an interruption is detected (e.g., reacting to a notification), the tree shrinks, resulting in a loss of fruit / points. This idea combines the visual representation of Liu et al [9], who could already show significantly lower off-task time through visual feedback in a desktop environment, with a gamification approach. A very similar concept is implemented in the Forest App 3 .…”

“…Liu et al [12] conducted an experiment where visual feedback was meant to motivate users to return to the primary task. The visual feedback was either a progress bar that depleted or a flower that withered as the user strayed from the primary task.…”
