Suppressed Prolactin but Normal Neurophysin Levels in Cigarette Smoking Breast‐feeding Women

Abstract: The hormonal responses to breast-feeding were studied during the first 3 post-partum weeks in ten women smoking more than fifteen cigarettes/day and in a control group. Basal PRL levels were significantly lower in smokers compared with non-smokers, but suckling induced acute increments in serum PRL and oxytocin-linked neurophysin, which were not influenced by smoking. The lactational pattern was normal, but smokers weaned their babies significantly earlier compared with non-smokers. Heavy cigarette smoking wom… Show more

“…The generally lower level at which the system operates may be due directly to endothelial functioning (e.g., reduction in healthy cells or reduced synthesis), but may also be mediated through a regulation center elsewhere (e.g., in the brain) similar to the effect of smoking on the prolactin of lactating women. 49 Recently a specific inhibitor for t-PA has been discovered in plasma, 45 and this inhibitor can modulate t-PA activity. Determined by a specific method, the level is not significantly different between smokers and nonsmokers.…”

“…Os efeitos agudos e crônicos da injeção de nicotina sobre a liberação de prolactina em ratos foi avaliado por Hulihan-Giblin et al 54 . Estes autores observaram que uma única injeção de nicotina induz, inicialmente, um aumento da concentração de prolactina.…”

“…Human milk protein profiles could carry a better knowledge of the normal lactogenesis and a re-evaluation of the nutritious and immunological functions of human milk. They could display the immaturity of preterm milks (28), the increase of IgA, LZ, and LF in milk from mothers with infections such as mastitis (29), and the changes in milk proteins composition occuring in metabolic disorders (30) or with some medications and drugs such as nicotine that influence prolactine or oxytocin levels (31,32). Human milk protein profiles could be also usable to better evaluate nursery milk bank products and to improve individual fortification.…”
