Suprachoroidal Buckling

Abstract: The indentation effect achieved by the suprachoroidal approach can be used as a method for managing myopic foveoschisis and myopic macular hole with detachment even in eyes with failed primary vitrectomy, counteracting the role of posterior staphyloma in the role of the disease. This technique is also feasible for treating retinal tears, supporting the retina, and treating selected forms of retinal detachment including subsilicone inferior recurrent retinal detachment. It can be done separately or in associati… Show more

“…They created a sclerotomy anterior to the retinal tears, through which the SCS would be entered with a cyclodialysis spatula and hyaluronic acid injected into the SCS. In 2013, El Rayes and Elborgy described a modified technique in which they created a pocket in the SCS through which a light-guided catheter would be advanced to localize the region of the break. The concept of a temporary buckle was advanced by Kreissig et al in 1989 using the Lincoff parabulbar balloon.…”

“…Eight review articles have been written, the first in 2007 [33] , then in 2010 [36] , 2012 [38][39][40] and from 2016 to 2020 [44][45][46][47] , and two comparative studies were published in 2006 [13,22] . Twenty-nine papers are case-series [11,18,[27][28][29][48][49][50][51][52] , thirteen are case-reports [20,30,31,37,39,[53][54][55][56][57] whilst the remainder [26,34,35,40,[58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66] are related to general content [ Figure 1].…”

“…This technique can be performed without or in combination with vitrectomy, and has been successfully used for the treatment of patients with retinal detachment and myopic tractional maculopathies. 61 63 Although pars plana vitrectomy and scleral buckles are effective surgical techniques, they may still cause complications such as pain, diplopia, refractive error shifts, cataract progression, glaucoma, vitreous hemorrhage, and endophthalmitis. 64 Suprachoroidal buckling can be an elegant and relatively noninvasive technique that may become a useful adjunct to vitreoretinal surgery, although the technical difficulty may limit its widespread use for now.…”
