Supramolecular Structure for Large Strain Dissipation and Outstanding Impact Resistance in Polyvinylbutyral

Abstract: For decades, poly(vinylbutyral) (PVB) has been the polymer of choice to improve the impact resistance of laminated glass. PVB presents large rupture strain, large tensile strength and excellent dissipative properties. Here we investigate the relation between macromolecular structure and mechanical properties of plasticised PVB by combining large strain tensile experiments with calorimetry, X-ray and birefringence measurements. We find that the mechanical response is dominated by creep and that this plastic-lik… Show more

“…Therefore, the tensile response of PVB is sensitive to the strain rate: PVB becomes stiffer and more plastic-like when the strain rate increases (Figure 10a). Recently, Elzière et al (2019) have described the rheological properties of plasticized PVB with a non-linear viscoelasticity model, which accounts for both the pronounced hysteresis and the plastic-like behavior at high strain-rate.…”

“…For PVB including main two components of vinylalcohol and vinylbutyral, 43 it could obtain a good compatibility with PBS matrix via melt‐blending, as shown in Figure 8. The compatibility was a beneficial and critical condition to improve impact toughness of the PBS‐based composite.…”

“…This polymer film is comprised by three monomers, namely, vinylacetate (1-2%wt), vinylalcohol (18-20%wt), and vinylbutyral (80%wt). As detailed in the literature, a plasticizer molecule, namely, triethylene glycol bis (2ethylhexanoate) is also used in a concentration of about 20-30%wt leading to a 𝑇 𝑔 of around 20°C-30°C [7,10]. Meanwhile, the film's polydispersity index (PDI) from Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) is 1.42 while 𝑀 𝑤 is ∼200 kg mol -1 [7].…”
