“…2). The post-collisional intracontinental convergence continued in southwestern Anatolia until the late Miocene as suggested by the final emplacement of the Lycian Nappes onto this region (de Graciansky, 1968;de Graciansky, Lorenz & Magne, 1970;Brunn et al 1970;Besang et al 1977;Ssngor & Yilmaz, 1981;Hayward, 1984). This convergence generated here a compressional regime with north-south trending rifts and grabens filled with Middle to Upper Miocene sediments and the volcaniclastic rocks.…”

“…Görür et al (1995) interpreted the north trending structures as a product of a compressional regime, without taking into account the special location of the study area which is on top of Lycian nappes, and implied that this is applicable to the rest of western Turkey. The evidence presented in support of the existence of a compressional regime in Görür et al (1995) is the latest nappe emplacement (Guntic & Poisson, 1970;de Graciansky, Lorenz & Magne, 1970;Besang et al 1977). The claimed north-south compression (Görür et al 1995) during Middle to Late Miocene times should be restricted for the Lycian nap pile (see Seyitoglu, Scott & Rundle, 1992) due to the Early Miocene age of regionally distinct extensional structures (that is, Büyük Menderes graben: , and late Oligocene extensional shear zones (Bozkurt & Park, 1994) in southwest Turkey.…”

“…Isparta (Gutnic & Poisson, 1970) and (3) Tortonian clastic sediments near Antalya (de Graciansky, Lorenz & Magne, 1970;Hayward, 1984). The nappes have been thrust onto rocks containing Tortonian monazite (11.9 ± 0.4 to 9.15 ± 0.2 Ma: Besang et al 1977) on the island of Kos.…”
