Surface-Controlled Conversion of Ammonia Borane from Boron Nitride

Abstract: “One-pot regeneration”, which is simple regneneration method of ammonia borane (AB) using hydrazine and liquid ammonia, enables conversion of AB from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) after milling hydrogenation. Solution 11B-NMR revealed the presence of AB after NH3/N2H4 treatment of milled h-BN (BNHx) although the yield of AB was less than 5%. The conversion mechanism was clarified as B-H bonds on the h-BN surface created by ball-milling under hydrogen pressure have an ability to form AB, which was confirmed by… Show more

“…Nevertheless, it has been difficult to obtain high yields of regeneration. The regeneration of BN to AB has also been reported [321], though the regeneration yield is <5%. Thus, the regeneration of AB, HB and HBB remains as the main challenge for these compounds.…”

“…However, the regeneration process still needs to overcome the following difficulties: first, the reaction must be carried out under a high pressure and sealed environment, and second, measures must to be taken to increase the amount of BH in BNH x to increase the yield of AB. [ 288 ]…”

“…The highly polymerized material was mainly composed of (BH 2 NH 2 ) x and (BHNH) x , and its structural characteristics were similar to those of polyborazene (PB). [289] Hydrazine and liquid ammonia attack the B-H bond at the edge of BNH x to form an N m H n bond, resulting in the release [288] Copyright 2020, MDPI. of AB and N m H n from the BNH x surface (Figure 33).…”

“…Moreover, surface functionality also plays an essential role in AB regeneration. Although ceramic boron nitride (BN), which is completely dehydrogenated AB, is quite hard to be regenerated, B–H functionalized h-BN by milling hydrogenation forms AB by one-step regeneration . Therefore, it is favorable to stay on the route of low-polymerized PB as the main spent AB fuel instead of BN, when around 2 equiv of H 2 (13.4 wt %) can be released at much lower temperatures.…”
