Surface Coverage and Competitive Adsorption on Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract: The binding strength of dispersants to the surface of carbon nanotubes is of crucial importance for the efficiency of the dispersion process and for potential applications, yet data are scarce on this subject. Here we present the results of diffusion NMR experiments in dispersions of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) prepared by either the polymer Pluronics F127 or the protein bovine serum albumin (BSA). The experiments detect the amount of F127 molecules adsorbed onto the SWNT surface. This quantity is r… Show more

“…There is also no order to the surface area coverage of BSA on the nanotubes . BSA with NaCl is assumed to increase the ionic strength, but reduce the electrostatic interaction, between adjacent BSA molecules due to the screening effect of Na + and Cl − ions acting as counter and coions.…”

“…In this work, we report the assembly of nanocomposites combining MWNTs and two TMDs, WS 2 and MoS 2 , and the performance of the obtained WS 2 @MWNT and MoS 2 @MWNT materials as ORR and OER electrocatalysts. The individual building blocks were prepared using surfactants as dispersants and a strictly controlled dispersal procedure in aqueous media [ 44 , 45 , 46 , 47 ]. A schematic representation of the process, and its underlying rationale, is shown in Figure 1 A–C.…”

“…Consequently, the above variations would significantly diminish their optical and electrical properties 27 . On the other hand, non-covalent immobilization of proteins on an SWCNT or Gra may not change their physical properties, thus it could be considered as an alternative 28 . Therefore, recently there have been efforts to uncover changes occurring in protein structures after non-covalent attachment of proteins with different types of nanostructures 29 .…”
