Current biomedical titanium alloys have been repurposed from other industries, which has contributed to several biologically driven implant failure mechanisms. This review highlights the added value that may be gained by building an appreciation of implant biological responses at the onset of alloy design. Specifically, the fundamental mechanisms associated with immune response, angiogenesis, osseointegration and the potential threat of infection are discussed, including how elemental selection can modulate these pivotal systems. With a view to expedite inclusion of these interactions in alloy design criteria, methods to analyze these performance characteristics are also summarized. While machine learning techniques are being increasingly used to unearth complex relationships between alloying elements and material properties, much is still unknown about the correlation between composition and some bio‐related properties. To bridge this gap, high‐throughput methods are also reviewed to validate biological response along with cutting edge manufacturing approaches that may support rapid discovery. Taken together, this review encourages the alloy development community to rethink their approach to enable a new generation of biomedical implants intrinsically designed for a life in the body, including functionality to tackle biological challenges thereby offering improved patient outcomes.

With changes in people's lifestyles and the escalating pace of population aging, the incidence rate of chronic diseases has increased annually, posing significant challenges to both individual and societal health. Specifically engineered implantable medical textiles have exhibited structural superiority over other material types in repairing or replacing damaged tissues or organs within the body, along with the enhancement of their functions. They also play important roles in the treatment and management of chronic diseases. This review takes several representative implantable medical textiles, such as artificial blood vessels, artificial ligaments, and medical sutures, as examples to introduce the fundamental features of implantable medical textiles and the particularities inherent in their development. In addition, on the basis of the clinical requirements of anti‐infection, common strategies for the construction of antibacterial coatings are summarized. Ultimately, the development trend of implantable medical textiles is discussed. Through this review, we aim to provide certain insights for the conception and development of novel implantable medical textiles.

Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Bone–Implant Contact in Three Short Dental Implant Models with Varying Osseointegration Percentages

Objectives: Dental implants have become a cornerstone of restorative dentistry, providing a long-lasting method for tooth replacement. The degree of osseointegration has a significant effect on biomechanical stability at the bone–implant contact (BIC), determining the continued efficacy of these implants. However, the exact consequences of changing osseointegration levels on different implant designs, especially in bones with variable densities, are not well known. Methods: This study used 3D finite element analysis (FEA) to look at the biomechanical performance of three short dental implants: BioMet 3iT3, Straumann® Standard Plus Short-Regular Neck (SPS-RN), and Straumann® Standard Plus Short-Wide Neck (SPS-WN). This paper tested the implants at four stages of osseointegration: 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% in both high-density (bone type III) and low-density (bone type IV) cancellous bone. It also created and examined realistic CAD models under static occlusal loading conditions to assess stress distribution and major strains at the bone–implant contact. Results: The study discovered that as osseointegration increases, von Mises stress and principal strains go down significantly for all implant types. The SPS-WN implant had the lowest strain values, especially for bone with low density. These reductions demonstrate increased mechanical stability as the bone–implant interface becomes more capable of dispersing mechanical stresses, minimizing the potential for localized deformation and bone resorption. Conclusions: The results highlight the importance of achieving optimum osseointegration to reduce mechanical stress and increase the lifespan of dental implants. The SPS-WN type implant performed better in biomechanical tests than the others, especially when bone conditions were not ideal. This makes it a great choice for clinical applications that need long-term implant success.
