Surface extended-x-ray-absorption fine structure and scanning tunneling microscopy of Si(001)2×1-Sb

Abstract: Surface extended-x-ray-absorption fine structure (SEXAFS) has been combined with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to determine both the local and long-range bonding properties of the Si(001)2x l-Sb interface. Sb L3 edge SEXAFS shows that Sb dimers occupy a modified bridge site on the Si (001) surface with a Sb-Sb near-neighbor distance of 2.88 ±0.03 A. Each Sb atom of the dimer is bonded to two Si atoms with a Sb-Si bond length of 2.63 ± 0.04 A. STM resolves the dimer structure and provides the long-range p… Show more

“…Our energy optimization for Sb:Si(001)(1 x 2) also yields symmetric Sb dimers with a dimer-bond length of 2.87 ~ and a back-bond length of 2.52 ~k. These values are in good agreement with the results of Tang and Freeman [61] and with the experimental SEXAFS data of Richter et al [4] as shown in Table 6. The dimer-bond length 'is very similar to the Sb bulk-bond length of 2.90 N. The electronic spectrum of Sb:Si(001)(1 x 2) is very similiar to the surface-band structure of As:Si(001)(1 x 2).…”

“…Chemisorption of Sb, which is isoelectronic to As, leads to formation of Sb dimers at the Si(001) surface. This has been confirmed experimentally by combined SurfaceExtended X-ray-Absorption Fine-Structure (SEXAFS) and STM measurements carried out by Richter et al [4]. A formation of Sb dimers, which are perpendicular to the former Si dimers of the clean surface has been observed in .…”

“…In recent years, much attention has been paid to the adsorption of group-V atoms on the (001)(2x1) surfaces of Si and Ge because of their fundamental and technological importance [1][2][3][4]. The structural and electronic properties of the monolayer covered systems are well understood in terms of a symmetric dimer model, but little is known about the dynamical properties of these surfaces.…”
