Surface Modification of Backsheets Using Coupling Agents for Roll-To-Roll Processed Thin-Film Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Module Packaging Application

Abstract: For many flexible electronic and photonic devices, moisture stability is one of the most important factors that affects its short- and long-term performance. To maintain the performance, the device should be packaged in such a way that it hermetically blocks moisture from the device; however, in practice, it is rather difficult to achieve. The more practical solution is to impede the moisture ingress to the device. In optoelectronic devices that will be outdoors like solar cells, the interfacial adhesion stren… Show more

“…Surface functionalization is the process of adding certain functional groups to the surface layer of a polymer. Surface functionalization of polymers is often used to improve wetting, sealing, printing, dye absorption, resistance to glazing, or adhesion to other polymers or materials without changing the bulk properties of the polymer (Hah et al, 2021 ; Tyuftin & Kerry, 2020 ). In addition, surface functionalization was utilized to improve the efficacy of polymer food packaging barriers and impart antibacterial properties (Wong et al, 2020 ).…”

“…24 Besides, nearly all high-performance PSCs based on AS method have active layers of below 1000 nm in thickness, which is not thick enough to absorb all photons in the absorption range of the cell, 25 and roll-to-roll mass production of such thin-film devices is also difficult. 26,27 Various attempts have been proposed to replace antisolvent. For example, in 2016, Ding et al and Li et al both introduced a simple and effective gas pumping method (GP) free of antisolvent to extract the solvent of the precursor to produce large-area PSCs.…”

“…Unfortunately, the antisolvents are normally toxic; otherwise instantly and uniformly dropping antisolvents onto precursor film is almost impossible for large area productions . For example, in 2016, Ding et al and Li et al both introduced a simple and effective gas pumping method (GP) free of antisolvent to extract the solvent of the precursor to produce large-area PSCs. Nevertheless, the development of GP based perovskite solar cells was apparently lagging behind AS.…”
