Surface modification of poly(propylene) by photoinitiators: Improvement of adhesion and wettability

Abstract: Different benzophenone-type photoinitiators were photografted onto poly(propylene) (PP). The polymer surfaces were analyzed by means of contact angle measurements, UV spectroscopy, and FTIR-ATR. The modified samples showed a better wettability and higher surface energies, increasing from 26 mN/m for pure PP to 36 mN/m for the modified samples. The UV spectrum of the modified PP films showed two absorption bands that could be related to the grafted initiator. The effect of irradiation time and photoinitiator co… Show more

“…2, the original surface of PP is very hydrophobic with a contact angle of about 978 (n = 10), the manufacturer reports 928 to 1008. This contact angle value is in line with values between 84.68 and 1038 which have been reported by other research groups [18,21]. Contact angle measurements are very sensitive to impurities and irregularities at the surface.…”

“…Polypropylene (PP)-based pipette tips were used in their study as models for the plastic capillaries. Further, Castell et al [21] described an approach for the surface modification and characterization of PP substrates using UV radiation and BP as initiator. The BP modified PP samples were later used for grafting of different acrylates [21].…”

“…10 The unsaturated dimethacrylate polyesters, Uvecoat 1000 and Uvecoat 9010, were supplied by UCB Chemicals (Drogenbos, Belgium) and used as received. The photoinitiators, Benzohenone (BP), 1-Hydroxy-cyclohexyl-phenylketone (HCHPK), 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (DMPA), Bis(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)-phenylphosphine-oxide (BTPPO) and 1-[4-(2-Hydroxyethoxy)-phenyl]-2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-propane-1-one (HEPHMP), were supplied by Ciba Speciality Chemicals (Groot-Bijgaarden, Belgium) and used without any further purification ( Table 1).…”
