Surface modification strategies for combating catheter-related complications: recent advances and challenges

Abstract: Indwelling medical devices such as catheters are a ubiquitous and indispensable component in modern medical practice for improving therapeutic outcomes for patients. Yet at the same time, they can be a cause of healthcare-associated infections contributing to patient morbidity and mortality, and healthcare costs. Other surface-related complications can also arise from interactions of the catheter with biological components in the in vivo environment. This review summarizes the progress made in the development … Show more

“…It is becoming increasingly difficult to combat bacterial infection due to the emergence of multidrug resistant strains of bacteria, which leads to serious problems such as failure of medical devices and threats to global public health (Arciola, Campoccia, Speziale, Montanaro, & Costerton, 2012;Hall-Stoodley, Costerton, & Stoodley, 2004;Kim et al, 2015;Neoh, Li, Kang, Chiong, & Tambyah, 2017;Wei, Tang, Yu, & Chen, 2017). This has led to over 13 million deaths worldwide per year from infectious diseases (Song & Jang, 2014).…”

“…The innovation of more effective antimicrobial urinary catheter coatings is the central endeavor to eliminate the pathogen biofilm on medical implant. 30,31 Commonly, the solutions are based on our current understanding of the biofilmformation mechanisms, and can be divided into five major categories ( Fig. 1): (1) release of bactericidal agents; (2) contact-killing; (3) catheter surface modification for prevention of initial adherence; (4) biofilm disruption; and (5) use of benign bacterial biofilm to inhibit the pathogen colonization.…”

“…Les dispositifs médicaux (ou DM) -comme les pansements, les cathéters, les endoscopes -sont des outils indispensables à la médecine moderne, mais ils peuvent constituer un point d'entrée pour les microorganismes pathogènes : on parle alors d'infections associées aux soins (IAS) ou infections nosocomiales [38]. Les DM constituent des supports sur lesquels les bactéries, notamment les espèces formant des biofilms, peuvent proliférer [32].…”
