Surface Structural Studies of Methanesulfonic Acid at Air /Aqueous Solution Interfaces Using Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy

Abstract: Atmospheric gas phase species such as methanesulfonic acid (MSA) are adsorbed and accommodated into atmospheric aqueous-phase aerosols, and in some cases MSA is thought to be produced via aerosol surface chemistry. The studies described herein probe the surface molecular structure of MSA at aqueous solution surfaces using surface vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (VSFS). In the studies presented here, it is shown that MSA partitions to the surface and that the surface MSA has a preferred orientation in wh… Show more

“…Vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy experiments have mainly been performed using scanning SFG instruments with pulse-widths in the ps (picosecond) [15][16][17][18][19] or ns (nanosecond) [20][21][22][23] time regime that produce relatively narrow spectral bandwidths. In a scanning SFG system the nonlinear crystals used to convert a portion of the visible wavelength beam to an infrared beam are angle tuned.…”

“…Allen et al [16] reported that the presence of MSA enhances the coordination between interfacial water molecules, and that the oxygen atoms of MSA significantly form hydrogen bonds with the free OH. On the other hand, the study of Li et al [23] supports the fact that the hydration of MSA by a small number of water molecules is thermodynamically highly favored.…”

“…MSA is also one of the atmospheric oxidation products of dimethyl sulfide [13][14][15] and it is known to be efficient in forming aerosol particles which serve as cloud condensation nuclei [16].…”

“…It has been shown that the structure of water is further altered at charged interfaces. 3,5,[15][16][17][18][19] Because of this charge induced change in the interfacial water structure, experiments were initiated to determine the effect of charged interfaces on molecular orientational dynamics.…”
