The enhancement of concrete structures’ performance can easily be achieved. However, the main challenge is how to achieve this performance with respect to the economy and sustainability. The aim of this research is to examine the flexural strength, ductility, stiffness, and toughness of RC hollow one-way slabs that are voided by plastic bottles. A new technique of hollowing has been used in this work, where a steel mesh tube was prepared previously and filled manually with blank waste plastic bottles to form a light tube. This technique has some advantages including ease of installation and adequate bonding for the main steel reinforcements. Five RC one-way slabs were cast and tested in the lab to investigate some variables: the presence of hollow, the ratio of reinforcement, and slab thickness. Briefly, a new technique for voids enhances the flexural behavior with less concrete and weight. The ductility is increased by about 100% for the voided specimens for the same section’s thickness. Also, the rotation in supports had been reduced by about 30% when the thickness of voided slab was increased by about 15%.

During the operation of hydraulic turbine, the vibration often exceeds the standard due to flow excitation, which affects the safe and stable operation of the hydraulic turbine. In this paper, an on-line monitoring method for the flow excitation in Francis hydraulic turbine is proposed based on the dynamic characteristics of Francis hydraulic turbine. Firstly, based on the flow excitation characteristics in Francis hydraulic turbine and the dynamic equation of main shaft system, the internal relationships between the dynamic response of turbine bearing and the flow excitation in the Francis hydraulic turbine are clarified. Secondly, according to these relationships, a method based on wavelet transform (WT), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and variational mode decomposition (VMD) is proposed for extracting the flow excitation features in Francis hydraulic turbine. Then, by this method, the flow excitation features are acquired. Based on the obtained flow excitation features, the flow excitation can be monitored on-line. Finally, the proposed on-line monitoring method for the flow excitation in Francis hydraulic turbine is verified by experiments. Based on the results, the flow excitation components in the signal extracted by this method are about 35 % more than those extracted by the previous methods. The results show that the on-line monitoring method proposed in this paper is convenient and effective.

The effects of steel fiber volume rate and steel fiber concrete thickness on the crack development and crack resistance of basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) beams were investigated by flexural tests on six partially reinforced BFRP steel fiber reinforced concrete beams. The results showed that the addition of steel fibers effectively limited the extension height of the initial crack and the crack expansion after cracking, and the difference in the extension height of the crack between the partial steel fiber test beam and the full-section steel fiber test beam was small. For BFRP reinforced concrete beams partially reinforced with steel fibers, the development of the maximum crack width can be effectively suppressed under ultimate load. Its crack arresting effect is more similar to that of full-section steel fiber reinforced concrete beams with BFRP bars; it shows that adding steel fibers only in the compression zone of the beam can not only improve the load capacity of the beam but also obtain good economic benefits. According to the test results, on the basis of the bond-slip theory and the no-slip theory, a comprehensive calculation method of the crack spacing considering the bond effect between the steel bar and the concrete and the influence of the concrete protective layer is proposed. According to the calculation formula of crack width, and according to the influence of the actual plastic deformation of concrete in the tensile area of the section, the calculation formula of the normal section crack resistance of BFRP reinforced steel fiber concrete beams is carried out, and the calculation results are compared with the test results, which are in good agreement.
