Due to the dramatic increase in high data rate services and in order to meet the demands of the fifth-generation (5G) networks, researchers from both academia and industry are exploring advanced transmission techniques, new network architectures and new frequency spectrum such as the visible light and the millimeter wave (mmWave) spectra. Visible light communication (VLC) particularly is an emerging technology that has been introduced as a promising solution for 5G and beyond, owing to the large unexploited spectrum, which translates to significantly high data rates. Although VLC systems are more immune against interference and less susceptible to security vulnerabilities since light does not penetrate through walls, security issues arise naturally in VLC channels due to their open and broadcasting nature, compared to fiber-optic systems. In addition, since VLC is considered to be an enabling technology for 5G, and security is one of the 5G fundamental requirements, security issues should be carefully addressed and resolved in the VLC context. On the other hand, due to the success of physical layer security (PLS) in improving the security of radio-frequency (RF) wireless networks, extending such PLS techniques to VLC systems has been of great interest. Only two survey papers on security in VLC have been published in the literature. However, a comparative and unified survey on PLS for VLC from information theoretic and signal processing point of views is still missing. This paper covers almost all aspects of PLS for VLC, including different channel models, input distributions, network configurations, precoding/signaling strategies, and secrecy capacity and information rates. Furthermore, we propose a number of timely and open research directions for PLS-VLC systems, including the application of measurement-based indoor and outdoor channel models, incorporating user mobility and device orientation into the channel model, and combining VLC and RF systems to realize the potential of such technologies.

Are We Ready to Ride Autonomous Vehicles? A Pilot Study on Austrian Consumers’ Perspective

Automotive manufacturers are competing to be the first to introduce customer-ready autonomous vehicles. Some manufacturers are claiming to launch their first self-driving cars as early as 2020. Which all sounds very good and futuristic; however, the question arises, are customers even ready to adopt this new technological advancement? Therefore, this pilot study is aimed at finding out the answer to this question in the Austrian market. This study discovers the standpoint of Austrian consumers concerning the acceptance of self-driving cars for daily usage and gives an overview of the current point of view regarding autonomous vehicles (AVs). The data for this study was collected using an online, user-friendly, Likert scale survey. The collected data were processed and analyzed for empirical significance in SPSS using Spearman’s rank correlation and the Mann–Whitney U test supported by descriptive analysis. The results of the study indicate that Austrian consumers are well aware of autonomous vehicles and their technology. However, they have specific concerns about reliability, cybersecurity, and futuristic car-sharing models. Therefore, these concerns about AVs should be addressed by auto manufactures in order to gain consumers’ trust and sell them a new form of mobility.

Recently, the fast growth of communication technology has led to the design and implementation of different types of networks in different environments. One of these remarkable networks is vehicular ad hoc network (VANET).The ubiquitous connectivity among vehicles is possible through VANET in the absence of fixed infrastructure. Moreover, it provides safety and comfort to people sitting in the vehicles. In this regard, collecting information from vehicles that are moved constantly is an essential challenge. To develop an efficient method for data collection in the VANET, some parameters must be considered such as data aggregation, latency, packet delivery ratio, packet loss, scalability, security, transmission overhead, and vehicle density. Since data collection has a significant importance in the VANET, the aim of this study is to investigate the existing methods and describe the types of important issues and challenging problems that can be addressed in data collection in the VANET. The data collection techniques are investigated in four primary groups, namely, topology-based, cluster-based, geocast-based, and fog-based.Also, the mentioned parameters are important to compare all of the presented techniques. KEYWORDS communication architecture, data collection, VANET, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, vehicular ad hoc networks | INTRODUCTIONOne of the growing disruptive innovation is the Internet of things (IoT), which allows physical devices to communicate over heterogeneous networks. 1-3 Moreover, one of the IoT applications is vehicular ad hoc network (VANET), 4 which has been developed as a powerful technology aimed at providing safety and comfort to people sitting in the vehicles. 5,6 Moreover, it affords wireless communication among vehicles, and dynamic traffic data is transferred with a high accuracy and low cost. 7,8 The VANET is a module of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and a subdivision of mobile ad hoc network (MANET). 9,10 Typically, the vehicles are armed with sensing equipment and have a high storage and processing capacity. 11 The unique features of the VANETs include higher node density, instability of wireless channel and limited bandwidth, predictability of vehicular pathway, highly dynamic network topology that change quickly and repeatedly, sufficient energy and resources, and hard delay constraints. 12-14 A large scale of VANET is foreseen to be available in the near future because of the rapid growth of vehicles equipped with communication abilities. 15 The data dissemination and the data collection of vehicles are two significant factors supported by VANET. 16
