Survey on the Future Aeronautical Communication System and Its Development for Continental Communications

Abstract: International audienceWe present in this survey new technologies proposed for the evolution of the aeronautical communication infrastructure. Motivated by studies that estimate the growth of air traffic flow, it was decided to develop a future communication infrastructure (FCI) adapted to the future aeronautical scenario. The FCI development involves researchers, industrials, and aeronautical authorities from many countries around the world, and started in 2004. The L-band Digital Aeronautical Communication Sy… Show more

“…Furthermore, the VDL modes that were capable of increasing spectral efficiency by restricting transmission channel bandwidth resulted in degradation of system data rate which leads to the concept of broadbandoverlay systems [32], [38]. There are always some unused 25 KHz and 8.33 KHz AM voice channels, or ACARS and VDL data links at any given point in time, as well as channels that are being used at a significant distance whose interference is small enough to assume that they are unused.…”

“…To follow this road-map, the future air-to-ground (A/G) communications are foreseen to support a huge number of short messages for real-time automatic monitoring and controlling [2], [3]. However, the existing aeronautical data-links may not be able to support the high frequency small data communications efficiently [4], where short messages (only hundreds of bits normally) operated hundreds of times within a second. On one hand, the mechanism of apply-and-allocate may lead to a horrendous waste of valuable aeronautical spectrum resources, because the actual transmitting time may be very limited comparing the waiting time, especially for short messages.…”
