Survival data and prognostic factors seen in Pakistani patients with esophageal cancer

Abstract: We found that patients with squamous cell carcinoma and absence of thrombocytopenia and obstruction had a better overall survival. However, this is a limited retrospective analysis; we therefore recommend that these prognostic factors be evaluated in larger studies.

“…This is reflected in the 1 and 3 year survival rates as well.Survival of esophageal cancer is influenced by several factors. Age of patients was one of the Predictive factors in the current study and was inversely associated with the survival rate, as in several studies (Hajian, 2001;Alidina et al, 2004;Shitara et al, 2010;Aghcheli et al, 2011;Ghadimi et al, 2011). The other factor was cigarette smoking which inversely predicted the survival.…”

“…[18] Absence of thrombocytopenia is also shown to be associated with better prognosis in patients with esophageal SCC without tumor obstruction. [19] However, our patients were not thrombocytopenic either.…”

“…According to the result of our study, the median age at diagnosis of esophageal cancer was 60 years (range 17-88). The median age at presentation of esophageal cancer is 72 years in Scotland (Alidina et al, 2004). Therefore, this cancer is a disease of the younger age group in the northern part of Afghanistan.…”

“…This is a unique epidemiological feature that differentiated it from other cancer types. The contrast variation of 3/100,000 per year in western countries and 140/100,000 per year in Central Asia (Alidina et al, 2004) is a remarkable need for more researches to identify factors of the high incidence rate. Esophageal cancer stretches eastward through Asian Esophagus Cancer Belt in the region of Central Asia, from Iran through Turkmenistan, Northern Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan to Northern China (Mir et al, 2009;Igissinov et al, 2013).…”
