Survival Data for 648 Patients with Osteosarcoma Treated at One Institution

Abstract: During the past 30 years, the orthopaedic oncology group at the Massachusetts General Hospital has treated 648 patients with osteosarcoma centrally located in the bone. Using records maintained in a specifically designed computer system, a study was done to assess the factors that seemed to influence the survival outcome. The overall survival for the entire series was 68% at an average followup of 6 ± 4 years. Death occurred at a mean of 3 ± 3 years. Patient gender had no effect, but age of the patient was cor… Show more

“…Therefore, there is a clinical need to identify genetic markers that not only provide insight into the pathogenesis of OS, but also its metastasis. With the current treatment for OS, which includes wide resection and chemotherapy, the average 5-year diseasefree survival rate is 65-70% (Davis et al, 1994;Mankin et al, 2004). However, despite advances in chemotherapy and surgical techniques over the last three decades, there has not been any significant improvement in patient survival.…”

“…Thereafter, there have been multiple recent studies which indicate that limb preservation is the norm is bone tumors. [11][12][13][14] Limb-salvage procedures can be divided into two groups: arthrodesis or arthroplasty. An arthrodesis is usually obtained using bone allografts [14], vascularised autografts [15] or both.…”

“…The median resection length was 15 cm (range 6-25): the longest resections were performed in distal femur (median 16 cm, range 12-25), followed be proximal femur (median 15 cm, range 6-25) proximal tibia (median 12 cm, range [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] . No extra reconstructive interventions were needed for soft tissue coverage in any patients.…”

“…OSA has a high tendency to metastatic spread, eighty percent of all metastases arise in the lungs, especially the periphery of the lungs. Metastatic OSA exhibits resistance to conventional chemotherapy (Bacci et al, 2008;Bielack et al, 2008;Harting et al, 2006;Hughes, 2009;Messerschmitt et al, 2009;Kager et al, 2003), more than 30% of them do not respond to chemotherapy (Mankin et al, 2004). Prognosis of non-metastatic OSA has improved dramatically since the invention of preoperative and postoperative chemotherapy in the 1970s.…”
