Susceptibility of anaerobic bacteria from several French hospitals to three major antibiotics

Abstract: The in vitro activity of cefoxitin was compared with those of metronidazole and clindamycin against 322 strains of anaerobic bacteria collected from several hospitals during 1982 and tested by an agar dilution method. Metronidazole and cefoxitin inhibited at least 89%o of strains tested, whereas clindamycin was less active.Continued updating of the susceptibility of recent clinical isolates and follow-up in changes of antibiotic patterns are periodically necessary in every country. When the same methodology is… Show more

“…The rate of resistance to clindamycin, 24%, was similar to those found by Betriu et al (1) and Finegold and Wexler (11) but was higher than those found in other studies (2,5,8). Clindamycin displayed poor activity against the non-B.…”

“…Most published work confirms the general susceptibilities of the isolates to erythromycin or clindamycin (5,9,10). However, clindamycin-and/or erythromycin-resistant strains were found in some studies (1,3,15). For 14% of the Peptococcus strains studied by Sutter and Finegold (13), which were isolated from 1972 to 1975 and that would now be classified as Peptostreptococcus strains (4), the clindamycin MIC was >64 ,ug/ml.…”

“…Mays and colleagues (72) (27,32,35,105) are considerably lower than our own values (see Table 1 (18,38,(41)(42)(43)(44)(45)95), Germany (49,55), Italy (16,90), Poland (65), Russia (13), Spain (12,67), Turkey (111), Switzerland (125), and the United Kingdom (50). A perusal of the articles with English abstracts was undertaken both to obtain data regarding antibiograms from foreign hospitals and to determine the kinds of techniques used in anaerobic susceptibility testing in other countries.…”
