Sustainable development goal interactions: An analysis based on the five pillars of the 2030 agenda

Abstract: The 2030 Agenda calls for a change in thinking in order to implement sustainable development goals (SDGs) and targets as a system. To achieve this goal, the 2030 Agenda established five pillars ("5 Ps"): people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. Here, we present a classification of these SDGs and their targets based on the five pillars. Our aim is to improve our understanding of interactions by assessing whether potential synergies and trade-offs are related to the classification of the targets. We su… Show more

“…In this context, several researchers address the holistic approach by using network analyses (Lusseau & Mancini, 2019; Pham‐Truffert, Metz, Fischer, Rueff, & Messerli, 2020; Putra, Pradhan, & Kropp, 2020). Further works combined qualitative and quantitative modeling to detect SDG interactions (Neumann, Anderson, & Denich, 2018; Scherer et al, 2018; Tremblay, Fortier, Boucher, Riffon, & Villeneuve, 2020). Pradhan et al (2017) provided the first quantification of synergies and trade‐offs within and across SDGs by applying a data‐driven longitudinal correlation analysis, accounting for all countries.…”

“…In so doing, it demonstrates the value of the approach in identifying opportunities for integrated action at scale. It also contributes to the body of research that has explored the way the targets interact with each other, several of which have called for context-specific case studies (see for example Dawes, 2020;Nilsson, Griggs, & Visbeck, 2016;Pham-Truffert, Metz, Fischer, Rueff, & Messerli, 2020;Pradhan, Costa, Rybski, Lucht, & Kropp, 2017;Singh et al, 2018;SuSanA, 2017;Tremblay, Fortier, Boucher, Riffon, & Villeneuve, 2020) and to research on sanitation in the context of Agenda 2030 in Brazil (e.g., de Carvalho, Barcellos, & Marques, 2018;Carvalho & Spataru, 2018;Dias, Rosa, Gomez, & D'avignon, 2018;Urbanvinicius et al, 2018).…”
