Sustainable Development: Methodological Approaches Towards Issues

Abstract: Aim of the paper is to outline a research methodology, which would ultimately allow predicting and enhancing competitiveness of less developed economies, which encounter energy security issues. The following theoretical questions are to be discussed. The first, what we mean by sustainable development in countries, which are in different economic development phases, i.e. if emphasis on different facets of sustainability (particularly economic environmental, related to energy consumption patterns) changes as cou… Show more

“…Increasing demand of oil in Asia, Europe's dependency on gas and environmental degradation due to increase in energy use become problems under consideration. Hence energy availability represents the classical, or early characteristics of energy security, while affordability and acceptability may be conditionally called "new" characteristics, which are introduced in attempt to address contemporary issues of global development, such as increasing demand of energy, triggered by increasing population and respective increase of economic activities, and consequent environmental degradation (Dudzevičiūtė 2012;Tvaronavičienė 2012Tvaronavičienė , 2014Antanavičienė 2014;Balitskiy et al 2014;Balkytė, Tvaronavičienė 2010;Bilevičienė, Bilevičiūtė 2015;Caurkubule, Rubanovskis 2014;Corneliu, Tamošiūnienė 2015;Dezellus et al 2015;Lapinskienė et al 2014Lapinskienė et al , 2013Peker et al 2014;Rakauskienė 2014;Vosylius et al 2013;Tvaronavičienė et al 2014;Raudeliūnienė et al 2014;Jefremov, Rubanovskis 2015;Vasiliūnaitė 2014;Bistrova et al 2014;Borshchevska 2015).…”

“…Complete inelasticity from an economic point of view would mean that an increase in price does not affect the quantity consumed. Hence, in our case, we ignore aspects of energy affordability and assume that energy is affordable, at least to the industry sector, and price does not affect production volumes and competitiveness of export Tvaronavičienė, 2014;Vasiliūnaitė, 2014). Despite the assumption we provide here this has to be attributed to a category of research limitations, there is research, which verify this scientifically-limited assumption.…”

“…The vast amount of scientific and political literature usually tackles not sustainable industry development (Tvaronavičienė, 2014), but rather the sustainable development of a whole economy or country Grybaitė, 2011;Raudeliūnienė et al, 2014;Stańczyk, 2011;Vasiliūnaitė, 2014). The first aspect of novelty, as it was indicated above, lies in choosing a specific industry, as an object of sustainable development.…”

“…Trade volumes are expected to continue growing, leading to increasing demands with regard to the performance of freight transport networks ( [1][2][3]). The current estimations for Europe are predicting a 50% increase in passenger and freight transport within the next 20 years [4].…”
