Sustained Ventricular Tachycardia as the First Manifestation of Hydatid Cyst Located in the Interventricular Septum

Abstract: Echinococcus granulosus infection may manifest with cardiac involvement causing various symptoms. Here, we discuss a case of a young patient who presented with sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT) causing hemodynamic compromise. Diagnosis of cardiac hydatid cyst was established with echocardiography, computed tomography imaging, and serological examination. After surgical removal of the cyst VT did not recur.

“…Clinical presentation depends on the location of the cysts, whether they are intact and infiltration of the underlying structures. Only few patients especially those with large size and involving underlying structures present with symptoms [2] like dyspnea, palpitations, angina, conduction disturbances, arrhythmias, valvular dysfunction, and outflow tract obstruction [3][4][5]. They can also present as systemic or pulmonary embolization [6].…”

“…While the incidence of rupture of inactive hydatid cysts is low, their potential to cause malignant ventricular arrhythmias is unaffected by cyst activity. Surgical excision eliminates the risk of recurrent ventricular arrhythmia [1113].…”
