Sustained Yield Forestry in Sweden and Russia: How Does it Correspond to Sustainable Forest Management Policy?

Abstract: This paper analyzes how sustained yield (SY) forestry is defined and implemented in Sweden and Russia, two countries with different forest-industrial regimes. We first compare definitions of SY forestry in national legislation and policies. Then we study forest management planning in two large forest management units with respect to: delivered forest products and values, how the harvest level of timber is defined, where the harvest takes place, and what treatments are used to sustain desired forest products an… Show more

“…A third step is to contribute to general learning based on local experiences and knowledge production, i.e., to go from tacit to explicit knowledge (Nonaka and Konno 1998). Systematic collection of stratified information from case studies provides relevant context-dependent knowledge that can be used in practice (Andersson et al 2012a; Elbakidze 2013a). …”

“…A second approach is to describe landscapes’ use and non-use values, and the products derived (cf. Merlo and Croitoru 2005; Richnau et al 2013; Elbakidze et al 2013a). A third way is to identify and analyze the types of land cover and land use related to use and non-use values (Merlo and Croitoru 2005).…”
