Suture anchor fixation may be an alternative to tension band wiring in olecranon fractures: Finite element analysis

Abstract: This study aims to analyze and compare total deformations with tension band wiring (TBW), intramedullary screw (IS) and novel suture anchor (SA) fixation methods, and to investigate practicality of SA fixation in olecranon fractures using finite element analysis (FEA). Materials and methods: This finite element analysis study was conducted between May 2019 and October 2019. TBW, IS and SA fixation methods were compared in order to analyze fracture behavior in the ulna and humerus using FEA, which is among the … Show more

“…Instability due to K‐wire position and tendency toward more osteoarthritis and migration because of the K‐wire placement were reported in the literature 35,36 . In a study, fixation by anchors was also suggested to prevent complications due to K‐wires 37 . In the present study, we compared two tension band wiring surgical techniques: one with K‐wires and the other with a screw.…”

“…35,36 In a study, fixation by anchors was also suggested to prevent complications due to K-wires. 37 In the present study, we compared two tension band wiring surgical techniques: one with K-wires and the other with a screw. However, at 45°and 90°of elbow flexion, we observed a much more opening angle in the SC-TBW group.…”

“…Three articles were excluded upon full-text evaluation. The Kuru and Mutlu study 6 was excluded because they used a 3-dimensional finite element bone model to simulate real human bone and compare different fixation techniques. This model was excluded in this review because it did not simulate real anatomical tissue subjected to mathematical computer-based equations to provide results of the difference techniques.…”

“…Olecranon fractures are one of the most common elbow fractures in adults and also constitute approximately 8 to 10% of all upper limb fractures. [ 1 , 2 ] Simple transverse olecranon fractures are the most common pattern. [ 3 ] These fractures generally show a bimodal distribution; they are seen after high-energy trauma in young patients and after simple falls in older patients due to poor bone quality.…”
