Sutures enriched with adipose-derived stem cells decrease the local acute inflammation after tracheal anastomosis in a murine model

Abstract: Biosutures are a comfortable way of stem cell delivery to the surgical field without modification of the operative protocol. ASCs suppress the local acute inflammatory reaction (increased macrophage migration and decreased neutrophil infiltration) in the tracheal anastomosis and cause an early switch from acute to chronic inflammation.

“…Similar results have been reported by Wolbank et al 2009 [408], who also note that immortalization does not alter the immunosuppressive capacity of their ASCs. ASCs have been cultured with sutures to create "biosutures" capable of repressing inflammation in tracheal resections [409]. Finally, while decellularized dermal matrices have become quite popular in ASC-driven regeneration, the field is being expanded through studies seeding ASCs into other decellularized tissues, such as lung matrices [410] and tendons [411].…”

“…Finally, lengths of sutures used to close a wound will get exposed to primary epidermal and dermal cells. It will be of note whether the inflammatory response is dampened (see Georgiev-Hristov T. et al, 2012) [19]. Another use for this technique could be in the healing of the donor site after a skin graft is obtained.…”
