Suturing for Optimal Soft-Tissue Management

Abstract: Establishing nontension primary wound closure of various soft tissue flaps is paramount for optimal postsurgical wound healing. Surgical procedures that require clinical flap manipulation, such as those used with traditional periodontal therapy, periodontal plastic cosmetic surgery, hard and soft tissue regeneration, and the excision of pathologic tissue, also require excellence in execution. Also paramount to clinical success is a thorough understanding of the various techniques of surgery, suturing, and the … Show more

“…Doku tipi, yaranın durumu, iyileĢme yeteneği ve post-operatif rahatlık dikiĢ materyali seçiminde etkili olan faktörlerdir. 14,15 DikiĢlerin gerilebilme miktarı, dokuların gerginlik derecesiyle uyumlu olmalıdır. En az doku reaksiyonunun oluĢması için boyutları küçük olan dikiĢ materyalleri tercih edilmelidir.…”

“…Most oral surgical interventions require primary wound closure using a previously raised flap [23] . For this purpose, a variety of suture materials are available which may be classified upon their origin (organic and synthetic) or according to their durability in host tissues (absorbable and nonabsorbable) [5][6] . There are some essential features of suture materials which include (1) knot safety, (2) stretch capacity, (3) tissue reactivity, and (4) wound safety.…”

“…There are some essential features of suture materials which include (1) knot safety, (2) stretch capacity, (3) tissue reactivity, and (4) wound safety. Besides the adopted surgical and suturing technique, the choice of suture material may also influence the healing of the incised soft tissues [5][6][7]15] .…”

“…A two-pronged approach of using the appropriate suturing technique and suture material plays a critical role in avoiding wound failures, and is key to proper postoperative tissue positioning and adaptation [1][2][3][4][5] . Sutures may degrade and lose their desirable material properties due to extended exposure in hostile environments, such as the stomach which is highly acidic 6) .…”
