Swelling and network parameters of high oil‐absorptive network based on 1‐octene and isodecyl acrylate copolymers

Abstract: Crosslinked 1-octene-isodecyl acrylate copolymers were synthesized and evaluated for oil-absorbency applications. The copolymer was crosslinked at different concentrations of ethylene glycol diacrylate (EGDA) and EG dimethacrylate (EGDMA) crosslinkers via catalytic initiation or by electron-beam irradiation at a dose rate 80 kGy. The concentration of both crosslinkers was varied from 0.5 to 2%. The effects of the crosslinking conditions such as crosslinker concentration, method of polymerization and monomer co… Show more

“…Many researchers have made significant contributions towards the progress on the synthesis of oil-absorbent (Farag & El-Saeed, 2008;Jang & Kim, 2000a, 2000bKim, Chung, Ha, Kim, & Cho, 1999;Medeiros, Oliveira, Sansiviero, Araujo, & Lago, 2010;Shan, Xu, Weng, & Huang, 2003a, 2003bShimizu, Koshiro, Yamada, & Tada, 1997;Zhou & Chuai, 2010). Atta and coworkers reported some oil-absorbents based on polyisobutylene/octadecyl acrylate copolymers (Atta, El-Ghazawy, Farag, & Abdel-Azim, 2006), cinnamoyloxyethyl methacrylates/isooctyl acrylate (Atta, El-Ghazawy, Farag, ElKafrawy, & Abdel-Azim, 2005), and reactive ␣-olefins/maleic anhydride (Atta & Arndt, 2005;Atta, El-Hamouly, Sabagh, Al, & Gabr, 2007a, 2007b. Zhou et al prepared 4-tert-butylstyrene-EPDM-divinylbenzene graft terpolymer and investigated the oil absorption properties (Wu & Zhou, 2009a, 2009bZhou & Cho, 2001, 2003.…”

“…Personal care products are to deliver functionality whilst being structured, while the crude oil industry just tries to avoid that the oil gets structured (Visintin, Lapasin, Vignati, Dántona, & Lockhart, 2005;Stachowiak, Viguié, Grolier, & Rogalski, 2005; Buenrostro-Gonzalez, Lira-Galeana, Gil-Villegas, & Wu, 2004). A recent review on oil structuring is presented by Pernetti, van Malssen, Flö ter, and Bot (2007 There are several schemes that can be applied to structure oil, such as the application of polymers (Atta & Arndt, 2005), surfactant systems (Angelico et al, 2005), or low-molecular weight gelators (Ojijo et al, 2004a(Ojijo et al, , 2004bGandolfo et al, 2004;Realdon et al, 2001), in order to replace classical structuring components. Fats and oils show a very strong intersolubility between TAGs, mono-and diacylglycerols, as well as free fatty acids in the liquid or in the solid state.…”

“…Atta and coworkers 8,9 synthesized oil-absorptive networks based on 1-octene and isodecyl acrylate copolymers or pairs of 1-docosanylacrylate, cinnamoyloxy ethyl methacrylate, and methyl methacrylate in the presence of an initiator and 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane triacrylate as a crosslinker, and these proved to be highly efficient oil sorbents.…”
