Swelling, sealing, and hemostatic ability of a novel biomaterial: A polyethylene glycol-coated collagen pad

Abstract: Trends in the development of hemostatic agents are towards self-adhering pads. This study investigates a novel biomaterial made of a polyethylene glycol-coated collagen pad (PCC). The swelling and adherence of PCC were investigated in vitro, and the hemostatic and sealing ability was investigated in vivo. In vitro, the maximum swell of PCC submerged in human plasma for 24 h is 65%. The greatest swell was in thickness, averaging 24% to a mean thickness of 2.5 ± 0.19 mm (mean±SD) (N = 20). PCC withstood clinical… Show more

“…Collagen was found to have advantages such as facilitating aggregation of platelets, trigging the intrinsic blood coagulation pathway to facilitate blood clotting, speeding up wound healing, increasing the immunity of the body and reducing wound infection [101,102,103]. Nevertheless, the efficacy of hemostatic materials with one component alone was limited.…”

“…Hemopatch is a new hemostatic pad with a dual mechanism of action: a sealing effect and the induction of clot formation [1]. It consists of a bovine-derived collagen pad, marked on one side with blue squares for easy visualization (nonactive side) [2]. The active side is coated with a thin layer of reactive pentaerythritol polyethylene glycol ether tetrasuccinimidyl glutarate (NHS-PEG), a synthetic mechanical sealant [2].…”

The active side is coated with a thin layer of reactive pentaerythritol polyethylene glycol ether tetrasuccinimidyl glutarate (NHS-PEG), a synthetic mechanical sealant [2]. On contact with blood and fluids, the PEG-based sealant forms covalent bonds with blood proteins and the underlying tissue, thus fixing the pad to the application site and sealing the wound [2].…”

“…A new topical hemostat, a polyethylene-glycol coated collagen pad (PCC), has recently been described [7]. PCC is a soft, thin, pliable bovine collagen pad coated with a protein-reactive polyethyleneglycol (PEG) cross-linker that promotes hemostasis and strong tissue adherence.…”
