Switchable generation of rectangular noise-like pulse and dissipative soliton resonance in a fiber laser

Abstract: We report on the switchable generation of a rectangular noise-like pulse (NLP) and a dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) in a fiber laser with highly nonlinear effect at very low pump power. The NLP centered at 1530.5 nm demonstrates a new characteristic that its profile evolves gradually from rectangular shape to Gaussian-like shape with the increasing pump power. By appropriately manipulating the polarization controller (PC), the laser switches emit a DSR pulse centered at 1551.3 nm. The duration of the DSR … Show more

“…Such peculiar pulse regime has been first reported in details from the MLFL experiment in 1997, 108 which is then called NLPs. NLPs have been found in the fiber lasers based on the multiple mode-locking mechanisms 96,[109][110][111][112][113][114] and, therefore, are characterized with universality. In other words, NLP generation is quite generic dynamics for partially modelocked lasers that emit pulse packets of optical noise burst with the fundamental frequency or the harmonics.…”

“…S6 for more details), showing the all-fibre amplification potential of such 635 nm mode-locked pulses. A noise-like pulse (NLP), which consists of many chaotic sub-pulses with a low temporal coherence 38 , is another typical operation state in the 635 nm passively mode-locked figure-eight fibre laser. In our experiment, by changing the polarization state (i.e.…”

“…One can see that (1) under CW operation, the optical spectrum (green) is relatively wide and composed of some irregular peaks; (2) under DSR mode-locking operation, the spectrum (red) becomes very smooth and has a narrow bandwidth (<0.1 nm) spectrum with typical steep edges; and (3) under NLP mode-locking operation, the optical spectrum (blue) is obviously broader and has an increasing spectral bandwidth as the pump power increases (see Fig. S7a), which is a typical spectral characteristic of NLPs 38,39 . Moreover, a modulated optical spectrum (~0.24 nm period) emerges in the NLP mode locking, which is due to the strong nonlinear effects (e.g.…”

“…The demonstrated laser features the highest fundamental repetition rate NLP generation by far. This DS-NLP switchable fiber laser with precise pump power control can be considered as multi-functional optical source for non-linear optical frequency transformation [27] and investigation of nonlinear dynamics [24,28]. Even more, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to generate NLPs from an Er-doped fiber laser (EDFL) based on a 45° TFG.…”
