Symmetries in human brain language pathways correlate with verbal recall

Abstract: Lateralization of language to the left hemisphere is considered a key aspect of human brain organization. We used diffusion tensor MRI to perform in vivo virtual dissection of language pathways to assess the relationship between brain asymmetry and cognitive performance in the normal population. Our findings suggest interhemispheric differences in direct connections between Broca's and Wernicke's territories, with extreme leftward lateralization in more than half of the subjects and bilateral symmetrical distr… Show more

“…The dorsal pathway along the AF and SLF was described in numerous recent DTI studies of the human brain (15)(16)(17). There is no doubt that these broad fascicles connect the temporal and inferior parietal lobes with the frontal lobe.…”

“…We used K-means cluster analysis (Steinhaus 1957;Forgy 1965;MacQueen 1967;Hartigan and Wong 1979;Lloyd 1982) on the ratio between the hyperactivity-impulsivity and inattention CPRS-R scores to fractionate our sample into three subgroups: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive and combined. K-means clustering analysis is a commonly used approach to identify relatively homogeneous groups of cases or variables based on selected characteristics (Johansen-Berg et al 2004;Anwander et al 2007;Catani et al 2007;). This identified the following: 53 children with a predominantly inattentive CPRS score (32%, 7-17 year old, 11.28 ± 2.75 years, 34 males and 19 females); 44 children (27%, 7-17 year old, 11.36 ± 2.59 years, 34 males and 10 females) with a predominantly hyperactive-impulsive CPRS score and 68 children (41%, 7-16 year old, 10.39 ± 2.24 years, 53 males and 15 females) with a combined symptom profile.…”

“…The latter might represent different dynamic features of vocal expressions at the temporal frequency of speech segments and on a suprasegmental speech level. This dual stream model has been described only for the left hemisphere, but comparable structural hard wiring in the right hemisphere ; Thiebaut de Schotten et al, 2012) might suggest similar dual stream pathways there, though the evidence for the latter is less consistent (Catani et al, 2007;Rilling et al, 2008). Together with the notion that left and right auditory regions parse the speech signal at different time scales (Giraud et al, 2007;Poeppel, 2003), these observations might suggest that the left and right IFC have access to temporal acoustic information of vocal intonations, which are differently sampled in time.…”
