Symptomatic fracture incidence in elderly men and women: The Dubbo osteoporosis epidemiology study (DOES)

Abstract: This longitudinal population-based study documents the incidence of all symptomatic fractures from 1989 to 1992 in an elderly, predominantly Caucasian population of males and females (> or = 60 years as at 1 January 1989) living in the geographically isolated region of the city of Dubbo, NSW, Australia. Fractures were ascertained by reviewing reports from all radiology services in the region. “…Fractures occurring during the study period were identified for residents of the Dubbo local government area through radiologists' reports from the two centers providing X-ray services, as described previously. (20,21) Fractures were included only if the report of fracture was definite and, on interview, had occurred with low trauma (eg, fall from standing height or less). Fractures clearly owing to major trauma (eg, motor vehicle accidents), those owing to underlying diseases (eg, cancer or bone-related diseases), or those of digit, skull, or cervical spine were excluded from the analysis.…”

“…Fractures are a major public health problem in males as well as females (Jones et al, 1994). Bone density is one of the major predictors of osteoporotic fractures (Marshall et al, 1996) in the elderly and is the result of the amount of bone gained in early life (ie peak bone mass) and subsequent bone loss (Hansen et al, 1991).…”

“…Эта категория пациентов не так давно привлекла внимание клиницистов, поскольку долго счита-лось, что ОП -сугубо женское заболевание. Каждый 4-й муж-чина старше 60 лет подвержен развитию переломов [32], 16% мужчин старше 50 лет и 35% старше 85 лет падают каждый год [33]. 30% переломов бедра и 20% переломов позвонков проис-ходит у мужчин [34].…”
