Symptomatic Relief Associated With Eyelid Hygiene in Anterior Blepharitis and MGD

Abstract: The results showed that eyelid hygiene with Blephaclean wipes by subjects with anterior blepharitis or MGD significantly decreased their associated symptomatology and increased their ocular comfort. The data confirmed the efficiency of the clinical methodology, put forward of 3 weeks of intensive use (twice a day) of eyelid wipes followed by maintenance use (once a day); that approach achieved a rapid symptomatic improvement that was maintained over time.

“…[121-127] While lid hygiene is indicated primarily for anterior blepharitis, it does serve a role in the management of MGD (posterior blepharitis), possibly by exfoliation of lid debris and reducing lid margin bacterial load. [117,128,129]. Anti-microbials such as systemic tetracyclines (doxycyline, minocycline),[130-134] and topical macrolides (1% azithromycin), that also have anti-inflammatory properties are the most commonly prescribed treatments of MGD.…”

“…Artificial tear supplements, which vary widely in their composition, serve to keep the ocular surface lubricated and help relieve patient discomfort 10 . Eyelid hygiene, of which many variations exist,12, 13, 14 removes bacteria from the eyelid margin and is a widely used treatment in the management of both blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) 11 . Finally, omega-3 fatty acids play a role in dry eye management by reducing inflammation at the ocular surface 10 …”
