Symptomatic Simple Renal Cyst: Comparison of Continuous Negative-Pressure Catheter Drainage and Single-Session Alcohol Sclerotherapy

Abstract: Continuous catheter drainage with negative pressure is more efficient than single-session alcohol sclerotherapy in the management of giant cysts. For moderately large cysts, the two methods have similar results.

“…In several studies, the prevalence of simple renal cysts, their number and size increased with age [1][2][3][4][5][6]14], as does arterial BP, and it has been questioned whether there might be a causal association between them [2,6]. All patients in our study had simple renal cysts, and the size of cysts increased with aging (Fig.…”

“…The cyst was considered to have disappeared if it could no longer be visualized on ultrasound or the area was replaced by an ill-defined echogenic area or normal echo pattern. Percutaneous treatment of the cysts was performed by prolonged catheter drainage or by alcohol sclerotherapy as the methods described in the previous studies [2][3][4]13].…”

“…Image-guided alcohol sclerotherapy has been used to treat simple renal cysts and liver cysts, as well as cystic thyroid and parathyroid nodules with considerably high success rates for a very long time and is considered as a safe and effective method with few side effects (11)(12)(13)(14)(15). This study is similar in many ways to the treatment efforts for renal and liver cysts involving treatment of simple cysts by single-session sclerotherapy using alcohol and reaspiration of the cavity.…”
