Synaptic-Adhesion Molecules Neurexin 1 and Neuroligin 1 as Novel Prognostic Factors in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Background: Synaptic adhesion molecules regulate synapse development and maintenance. Neurexins and neuroligins have been implicated in psychiatric disorders, and shown that they are related to vascular system and carcinomas in recent studies. In the present study we focused neurexin 1 and neuroligin1, and investigated the relationship between those two molecules expression and clinical features of oral cancer. Materials and methods: Fifty-six biopsy samples from oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) were anal… Show more

“…High expression of neurexin-1 has been linked with carcinogenesis, invasion and proliferation in breast cancer [75], drug response in gastric cancer [76] and to be predictive of a worse outcome in oral squamous cell carcinoma [77]. Supporting these observations, we found that neurexin-1 expression predicts outcome in patients and affects 3D spheroid formation and resistance to cytotoxic chemotherapeutics.…”

“…NRXN1 encodes a transmembrane protein that functions as a cell adhesion molecule in synaptic transmission ( Reissner et al, 2008 ). Its high expression was observed to be associated with favorable overall survival of patients with oral cancers ( Hirohata et al, 2018 ). P2RY13 encodes a protein belongs to the family of G-protein coupled receptors, moreover, its high expression demonstrated significantly higher overall survival rates in patients with breast cancer ( Xu et al, 2020 ) and lung adenocarcinoma ( Fan et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Neurexin-3 protein which is encoded by NRXN3 gene takes a role in cell adhesion and cell recognition and modulates intracellular signaling. It has been reported that polymorphism of NRXN3 gene (rs10146997) and mutations of NRXN3 gene are related with higher breast cancer risk [21,22]. Forkhead box protein Q1 (FOXQ1) is a transcription factor and takes a role in cancer, aging and development.…”
