Synchrotron X-Ray Diffraction Study of Texture Evolution in 904L Stainless Steel under Dynamic Shock Compression

Abstract: The influence of strain rate on development of deformation texture under a dynamic shock compression of a 904L stainless steel was quantitatively investigated using synchrotron X-ray diffraction and crystallographic orientation distribution function (ODF) analysis. The SplitHopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) technique was used to generate a high strain rate of >10 3 s À1 for preparing the deformed samples. Starting with an almost random texture in a solution treatment condition, the deformed material developed seve… Show more

“…The topography of grain orientation is more precise than optical microscopy and allows to determine the shape and size of grains [4]. An analysis of phase and crystallographic orientation of steel 904 L under the influence of dynamic deformations was presented in the article [5]. Research shows that the grains inside the transverse strands can result in little rotation while the transverse surfaces have less impact on the deformation texture.…”

“…In the literature, several studies are reported related to the microstructural evolution of AISI 904L, particularly focused on plastic deformation (e.g., [40][41][42]). Numerous variables have heavy impacts during this mechanical process and the consequent thermal treatments, so much that their effect needs to be analyzed in depth.…”
