Thermoset resins are widely used for composite applications due to their excellent mechanical properties. To further enhance their performance, nanofillers such as graphite nanoplatelets (GrNP) have been used, and extra improvement may arrive from surface treating these fillers. This study aims to evaluate the influence of GrNP content and treatment with (3‐glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane and (3‐aminopropyl)triethoxysilane on curing behavior and mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of GrNP/epoxy composites. Composites reinforced with 0.25 wt % GrNP displayed increased tensile strength by 11.8% compared to the neat resin. Addition of 0.5 wt % GrNP increased the glass transition temperature in 10°C compared to the neat polymer. Silane treated fillers showed an improvement in tensile strength and dynamic‐mechanical properties compared to the neat resin and non‐treated GrNP/epoxy composites at similar filler content. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present overview will focus on the tribological applications of what we have called ionanocarbon lubricants, that is, the combination of carbon nanophases (graphene, carbon nanotubes, nanodiamonds, carbon nanodots) and room-temperature ionic liquids in new dispersions, blends, or modified nanostructures and their use in tribology, lubrication, and surface engineering as friction-reducing, antiwear, and surface-protecting agents in thin films and composite materials. Further research lines and factors that limit the practical applications of the outstanding research results are also highlighted. The very recent results in these lines of research make this a necessary brief review.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes in the form of powder or as epoxy‐based masterbatch were compounded with diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)‐based epoxy resin in order to evaluate the effect of the dispersion state on the main properties of the epoxy‐based nanocomposites. 1‐Butyl‐3‐methyl‐imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (bmim.BF4) as ionic liquid was also employed to assist the CNT dispersion. The use of 1phr of CNT from ER‐based masterbatch is beneficial for improving the dispersion of CNT, as observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the processability of the resulting system, as indicated by rheological properties. The improved dispersion also promotes an improvement of the dynamic‐mechanical properties (glass transition temperature and storage modulus) as well as better adhesive properties. However, the CNT as powder displays better electrical and thermal conductivities. The presence of ionic liquid improves the electrical conductivity, but decreases the Tg and the adhesive properties. CNT also accelerates the curing process, which is also enhanced by the presence of ionic liquid. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 58:1689–1697, 2018. © 2017 Society of Plastics Engineers
