Synovial fluid peptidase activity as a biomarker for knee osteoarthritis clinical progression

Abstract: Aims To analyze the potential role of synovial fluid peptidase activity as a measure of disease burden and predictive biomarker of progression in knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods A cross-sectional study of 39 patients (women 71.8%, men 28.2%; mean age of 72.03 years (SD 1.15) with advanced KOA (Ahlbäck grade ≥ 3 and clinical indications for arthrocentesis) recruited through the (Orthopaedic Department at the Complejo Asistencial Universitario de León, Spain (CAULE)), measuring synovial fluid levels of puromy… Show more

“…Therapeutic approaches targeting IL-1 have been developed and shown a positive effect in animal models 44 . The evaluation of synovial fluid can add important information regarding disease burden and progression 45 , 46 . A previous report has described an improvement in synovial fluid characteristics of animals treated with intra-articular stanozolol 22 .…”

“…Also, Seco-Calvo and Colleagues (11) analyzed peptidase activity in synovial fluid in KOA patients, but they did not investigate whether type of therapy influences enzyme activity , Moreover, it is yet unknown if the activity of any particular enzyme can be taken into account as a reliable prognostic marker for the severity and progression of KOA. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to assess synovial fluid peptidase's potential role as a biomarker for KOA in Egyptian patients as well as to determine whether it can predict the clinical progression of such disease.…”

“…C-terminal cross-linked telopeptides of type II collagen (CTX-II) are one of the most frequently assessed markers for OA diagnosis ( 16 ). Synovial fluid peptidase activity could play a role as a measure of disease burden and a predictive biomarker of progression in knee OA ( 17 ). Interstitial stem cells have the potential for the clinical treatment of OA due to their effective immunomodulatory properties ( 18 ).…”
