Synthesis and ATRP Activity of New TREN‐Based Ligands

Abstract: Summary: Ligands suitable for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were prepared by the Michael addition of several acrylates (allyl, benzyl, butyl, 2‐ethylhexyl, and 3‐(dimethoxymethylsilyl)propyl acrylates) with tris(2‐aminoethyl)amine (TREN). These ligands, readily prepared from inexpensive precursors, were used for the preparation of catalyst complexes suitable for polymerization of (meth)acrylates and styrene, providing activity comparable to catalysts currently used for these monomers. Catalysts c… Show more

“…Ligands containing alkoxysilyl groups have been developed, and these form copper complexes that can react with silica and therefore be easily removed. 133 Various forms of extractionswith water, solutions of ligands strongly binding to copper ions, or ionic liquidss are also efficient. 134 In some cases, single or multiple precipitation of the polymer produced by ATRP in a nonsolvent containing compounds able to coordinate to the metal catalyst and therefore extract it from the product has been successfully used; an example is the repeated precipitation in a mixture of methanol and a saturated aqueous NH 4 -Cl solution.…”

“…M w and P are the average molecular weight of poly (styrene-co-butyl acrylate) and monomer conversion respectively. This result indicates that an insignificant degree of termination occurred during the polymerization [35][36][37]. Additionally, the results show a decrease in molecular weight by the addition of clay content and indicate that the presence of nanoclay layers in the polymerization system increases chain transfer or termination reactions [38].…”
