The study is focused on the synthesis of a new Co(II) and Ni(II) metal complexes, which is synthesized by the reaction of the isatin 4-aminoantipyrine Schiff base ligand with selected divalent Co(II) and Ni(II) ions and their possible applications as flame retardant additives in paint formulations for surface coating application. The prepared metal complexes were characterized using a combination of Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, 13 C-NMR spectra, and mass spectroscopy. The prepared Schiff base ligand metal complexes were physically added to alkyd paint formulation to give coating formulations at a laboratory scale and then applied onto plywood and steel panels using a brush. Cichoric acid (CA) belongs to the group of polyphenols, which occurs in a variety of plant species and it is characterized by anticancer, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Selected polyphenols have the ability to combine with metal ions to form chelate complexes that reveal greater biological activity than free compounds. In order to study possible antimicrobial and anticancer effect of CA and its complexes with copper(II)/zinc(II)/nickel(II)/cobalt(II) we decided to conduct cytotoxicity tests to estimate the most effective concentrations of tested compounds. The results of the presented study demonstrated, for the first time, that the treatment with newly synthesized CA-metal complexes has anticancer and antimicrobial effects, which were examined in seven different cell lines: MCF-7, MDA-MB-231, and ZR-75-1 breast cancer cell lines, A375 melanoma cell line, DLD-1 cell line, LN-229 cell line, FN cell line; five bacterial strains: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Proteus vulgaris, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, yeast Sacchcaromyces boulardii, and pathogenic yeast-like fungi Candida albicans. The presented study indicates that CA-metal complexes could be considered as a potential supplementary tool in anticancer therapy, however, because of their possible toxic activity on fibroblasts, they should be used with caution. Some of the tested complexes have also preservative properties and positive influence on normal non-pathogenic microorganisms, which was demonstrated in selected microbial strains, therefore they may serve as food preservatives of natural origin with cytoprotective properties.

Metal complexes, which were prepared from the reaction of an N‐salicylidene(4‐aminotoluene‐3‐sulfonic acid) Schiff base ligand (H2L) with Cu (II), Zn (II), and Ce (III), were characterized and confirmed by elemental analysis, molar conductance measurement, melting point, Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), electronic spectra, magnetic susceptibility, thermal analysis, and qualitative and quantitative antimicrobial studies. The geometry of the compounds was optimized using the semiempirical PM3 Hamiltonian with Restricted Hartree–Fock (RHF) and root‐mean‐square (RMS) gradient of 0.05 kcal/mol. The ligand and its metal complexes were physically incorporated into a water‐based paint and flexographic ink formulation to study their antimicrobial properties and performances as metal‐complex pigments. The results of their performance tests further enhanced their applications as pigments. The mechanical resistance of the prepared paint and ink was also studied to evaluate the possible drawbacks that were associated with the addition of the prepared pigments. Compared with the blank sample, the studies indicated that the physical incorporation of Cu complexes slightly enhanced the mechanical properties of the painted films (the gloss values, hardness, and adhesion) and printed paper (gloss, color strength [density], and abrasion resistance) according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Further, regarding the antimicrobial test, the obtained results can be represented according to the following activity order: the prepared ligand > Zn complex > Ce complex > Cu complex before or after the incorporations of the paint and ink.
